Manila Folder Design-Build Challenge

      We had the task to create a bridge with manila folders. We could only use two folders and a foot of tape. We had to suport as many magazines as posible over a 10 inch gap. You were only alowed to tape one side to the table.
       With the experience we had from previos challenges similar to this one we got right to it. We planed a litle and started building trying to learn from our mistakes. In the end our bridege with the refined desing was able to suport 26 magazines before colapsing.

Mouse Trap Race Car

After learning about several simple machines like levers and pulleys we were given the task to create a car that uses a mouse trap as power. We used our knoledge of this simple machines and created a car that was really succesfull.
We are claiming  4 achievments.
"Brainiac" - Brainstorm solutions for your design. Generate a list of at least 10 ideas/concepts.
"Visualize It!" - Create a sketch of a design and label key features.
"Competitor" - Compete in the 2nd Annual Mousetrap Racecar Challenge.
"Going the Mile!" - Travel the furthest or second furthest in the distance race.

Marble Design Build Challege

Goal: release your marble onto a freestanding contraption of your own design located at the edge of your desk. The goal is for your "structure" to direct your marble into a cup on the floor. The winner is the team who's cup is located furthest (horizontally) from the edge of the desk.
Equipment:
-14 straws
-10 toothpicks
-3 paper cups
-3 feet of masking tape
-1 round marble
We placed 5th in the competition.

Cardboard canoe challenge

I am claiming  11     Achievments!
This was a great chalenge. We had a lot of fun and learned how to manage time and team work. Throughout a couple of weeks we went through the design iteration. We came up with a design that we thought would do good in the competition. We built it and we took it to the pool. We ran into some troubles propullting the canoe. The canoe worked really good and it was really durable. It never sank.
Achievments
Design Achievements:
Define the Problem and Brainstorm Solutions - State the problem you are designing a solution for. List at least 20 ideas you have regarding your solution.
Criteria & Constraints - List or reference the specified Criteria and Constraints you're designing for. List at least one implied criteria. List at least three implied contsraints. • You may only use Cardboard and Duct Tape for this event.
• All Staples or other foreign material must be removed from your cardboard. If we trash the pool, we will not be invited back for other activities during the year (yes, we have other activities in mind for 2nd semester).
• Cardboard must meet our quality standard and be approved by the instructor (more info to follow)
• Each boat must have a minimum of a 3" tall "sidewall" (no completely flat designs).
• All exposed cardboard must be covered in duct tape (this will reduce cardboard disintigration in the pool).
• Each team will be provided one "versa table" cardboard box piece and three 60yrd rolls of duct tape. Any materials beyond this (likely need more cardboard) need to be resourced by your team.
-One implied criteria is that the boat must float
-Three implied constrains are:
     -Canoe must be finished
     -Someone must be on the canoe
     -It has to fit through the door
Sketch Ideas - Draw 3 different sketches for possible designs. Label at least 3 key features for each sketch. Describe the feature's functionality so a viewer understands why the called out feature is important
 
 
Prototype Ideas - Craft physical prototypes (models) of each of your three sketches. Use a notecard or post it note to call out at least one key feature on each model. Post the images to your blog and describe the key feature that you've pointed out on each.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Build Achievements:
Build It! - Build your watercraft. Your build must meet the standards of construction (100% covered in Duct Tape). Document it with a presentable photo.


Test Achievements:
The Farthest - Awarded to the team that can travel the furthest (laps)
-We traveled the required 4 laps
The Longest - Awarded to the team with the watercraft that floats the longest (multiple teams may be awarded this achievement if multiple boats remain afloat at the end of our competition period).

Balance Master - Awarded if you can have at least one person stand for 5 seconds in the boat (you must conduct this away from the edge of the pool so that non one falls over and hits their head)


 
Reflection Achievements:
 
Feedback - Generate ten items of feedback for your effort (from the design/build process and/or the actual product). Make sure you include at least one item of feedaback in each of our four feedback areas (+, change, ?, !)
+= positive, -= negative *= change
  1. + the triple bottom worked excellent!
  2. + our skipper was relatively small and a good courages captain!
  3. - the back of our boat wasn't to sturdy..*needed to reinforce with another layer of cardboard
  4. - we probably should of either had a paddle or someone pulling our boat in the water..*easily fixable by having our team mates get in the water
  5. +every member of our team contributed a lot to the creation of our boat!
  6. +we were finished with the construction of our boat 2 days prior to the race!
  7. - we didn't have the best angles for the front of our boat...*cutting more precise and taking more time to apply duck tape
  8. - we went for sturdiness and float ability over speed..*designing the boat to be lighter and smaller
  9. + all members of our team brought in cardboard and we had so much we got to give some away to other teams
  10. +we used very good and strudy cardboard!
  11. +And we all worked extremely well as a team!
How Low Did You Go? - How low in the water did your canoe sit (roughly)?
Our boat went for roughly 25 min before we had to take it out never sank.
Redesign - If we were to do another Carboard Canoe race next semester, what would you build? Draw from everything you experienced in your class and propose the most competative solution. Include a sketch with key features and dimensions labeled.
I would not change the design of the boat because it was durable and stabel. The only thing I would change is to get swimers to push the boat because moving was dificult.
